This workshop provides valuable information on the fundamentals of basic copyright protection, including copyright ability of works, ownership (initial ownership; transfers; works-for-hire), registration, infringement and remedies, and fair use. Through this workshop you will gain a basic understanding of copyright law and learn how to protect your work.

Presenter: 

Kohel Haver received his JD from the Northwestern Law School at Lewis & Clark College, and he is currently a partner at Swider Haver LLP. Haver practices in the areas working with creative people and the arts, including a specialty in copyright and related intellectual property, technology, and business law. He has been serving the arts community for all of his professional life, including service on the boards of directors for community and arts based programs nationwide.

Oregon Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (in partnership with the Regional Arts & Culture Council) presents this seminar about the basics of contracts for artists. This workshop will walk you through important contract clauses, how to negotiate those clauses effectively, and best practices to avoid finding yourself in contract litigation. Whether you are a painter, performer, or writer, this workshop will explore the elements of a succesful contract.

Presenters:

Sean Clancy is an attorney whose practice focuses on business and intellectual property (“IP”).  As outside IP counsel for a variety of innovative industries including state-licensed cannabis, entertainment media, design, consumer products, food, beverages, professional services, software, and new technology, Sean advises on state and federal trademark rights, copyrights, publicity, privacy, trade secrets, non-disclosure agreements, and licensing.  As general business and corporate counsel, Sean negotiates, prepares legal documents, and advises on relationships spanning from entity formation and ordinary business to complex transactions and disputes.  Before becoming an attorney, Sean was a filmmaker in Seattle.

Tricia Juettemeyer is senior corporate counsel at a software company headquartered in Portland. Prior to this Tricia was an intellectual property and business attorney at a law firm in Portland. She took a winding path to the law, starting with art school, working in post-production, heading to library school, working for many years as an academic librarian, along the way learning about copyright, eventually leading her to law school. Tricia has advised clients in the area of copyright law, trademark law, contracts, and more, and currently advises broadly on business and intellectual property matters. An educator as well as an attorney, Tricia taught Business Associations as an adjunct professor for the University of Oregon law school, and will teach an intellectual property for business course to undergraduates at Lewis & Clark College next spring.

In this workshop, OVLA will provide an overview of estate planning concepts, the documents involved and what they accomplish, and will touch on considerations unique to artists that must be addressed in their estate planning.
